Santa's After-Christmas Sanitizing Tips

Did Santa bring more than presents to your home this season? If a cold or flu made its way down the chimney (or through your front door), your holiday might have been a little less than ideal. Instead of sipping hot cocoa and enjoying your Christmas gifts, once your  family and friends went home you were left with coughing, aches, and not enough tissues. Sanitizing after Santa (or your sniffling out of town guests) is important as it will not only protect your remaining family from whatever germs came into your house, but it will also kick the germs to the curb faster and help you get well. So where should you focus on cleaning, and how should you do it?

Bedrooms. Did your holiday guests come into town with a touch of a cold that quickly turned into a full-blown flu before they left? Have your kids been coughing since Christmas Eve? Taking time to sanitize the bedrooms in your house is important in keeping your home healthy! Wash all bed linens on hot wash if possible, and spray down mattresses, mattress toppers, drapes, and other fabric surfaces that can't be washed with a disinfectant of your choice. Wipe down hard surfaces like bedside tables, headboards, tv remotes, curtain and blind cords/rods, light switches, doorknobs, etc. Pretty much any surface that could have been touched should be sanitized. Finally, open windows for a while if you can to air out the room, and vacuum the space with a HEPA filter to take care of any remaining particles.

Bathrooms. Much like the bedroom, all hard surfaces should be cleaned with sanitizing wipes or cleaners, and don't forget inside the shower or tub! In addition, steam mopping or mopping the floor with an antibacterial cleaner is a good way to take care of any residual viruses hanging around and give you a fresh start to work with.

Extras! Do you keep throws and blankets on chairs and sofas around your home? Wash those for sure! Television remotes are a major hot spot for germs, so cleaning them thoroughly is key when sanitizing after a bout of sickness has hit your household. Other commonly used items that should be thoroughly cleaned include:

  • cell phones

  • the handle on the refrigerator and/or freezer!

  • toothbrushes

  • makeup brushes and hairbrushes

  • car keys

Don't forget handy shortcuts that make the cleaning process easier! Most dishwashers for example are equipped with a sanitizing function. Running dishes, or even certain toys, on this function can disinfect them quickly without the need for chemicals!

Getting Festive in Florida! Thanksgiving Tips from The Sunshine State!

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it! While our temperatures certainly don't reflect the holiday season just yet, a trip to any local shopping center will let you know that visions of turkeys and family gatherings are at the forefront of everyone's minds. Here in Central Florida though, we have the freedom to celebrate Turkey Day in some unique (and fun) ways! We have some great ideas to help you add some Floridian flair to your Thanksgiving table this year, and give your guests a taste of the Sunshine State.

As you plan your menu, why not try:

A Twist on The Classic Pie

A twist of lime that is! Instead of traditional pumpkin or apple, wow your family and friends with a homemade key lime pie this Thanksgiving! Delicious, cool, and creamy, with just enough tartness to keep things interesting, it is THE classic dessert of Florida. Add some homemade whipped cream on the side (or piled high on top) and it's sure to be a hit!

A Tropical Tan for Your Turkey

A mojo marinade or sweet and spicy orange glaze is never disappointing, especially when it comes out adorning a big, golden turkey fresh from the oven (or the smoker) and placed in the center of the table. Orange, lime, lemon, and other "tropical" flavors reflect all the best of Florida, but blend beautifully with turkey, no matter how you choose to cook it. Recipes for this are nearly endless online. Look up one that calls to you and try something fresh this year!

Keep Your Table Fresh

Fall and Winter are when gardens are dying down across much of the US, but here in Florida, our growing season is still going strong. Many local markets will still have fresh produce of all kinds, so plan your holiday menu around these items! Instead of the typical green bean casserole, why not try sweet and savory roasted brussels sprouts alongside your turkey and mashed potatoes? Add some crunch with a bright salad, or try a fruit salsa to replace canned cranberry sauce. There are SO many ways to bring the freshness of Florida to your Thanksgiving table.

We are ready to make our beautiful home state part of our celebrations this year. How about you? We hope this holiday season is full of all the best for you and the ones you love. EZ Roofing Systems is here to make sure the roof above you this holiday season is secure, and ready to stand up to whatever the weather brings your way. Still dealing with damage from Ian? Our team is dedicated to putting measures in place that will protect your home from further water damage until final repairs can be made. It’s just one more way we make replacing and/or repairing your roof “EZ” and as stress-free as possible. Trust the company that is local, established, and has YOUR best interest at the center of our business.

Happy Thanksgiving from EZ Roofing Systems!

Halloween, Florida Style! Add Some Splash to Your Bash!

Holidays in Florida always seem to look a little different. Christmas? Sometimes we wear flip-flops and grill out. Thanksgiving? Seafood is a great alternative to turkey! We're used to doing things our own way here. Halloween is around the corner, and it's time to start thinking about how you'll be celebrating. We might not have Fall leaves or chilly air, but we DO have plenty of swimming pools! Did you know, there are lots of ways to make your pool area the hottest party spot in the neighborhood for a scary bash? The best part? You don't have to try very hard or spend much cash to make your pool "spook-tacular".

Here are our favorite ways to bring your pool into the festivities...

Floating Decor

There are SO many possibilities when it comes to items you can float in your pool for decorative purposes. If you want to go all out, carve pumpkins, and float them in your pool after dark with tea-lights flickering inside. Floating jack-o-lanterns take things to a whole new level! If you want something a little easier (and cheaper), opt for the plastic pumpkin buckets available at most stores around the Halloween holiday. Go with all orange for a traditional look, or mix it up and pick an array of colors.

For a spooky glowing effect, blow up balloons with glow sticks inside. Float them in your pool as "glowing orbs". Give it an extra dose of creepy and put glow sticks inside of inflated rubber gloves for glowing hands to disperse in your pool.

Send The Skeletons Floating!
Plastic skeletons are a classic Halloween decoration, but did you know you can kick up the scary fun (and possibly laughs) by taking your skeleton poolside? Pose plastic skeletons in patio lounge chairs with sunglasses, sun hats, drinks, etc. You can even prop one in or on a pool float and send it sailing in your pool. Guests will get a kick out of the newest "swimmer" at the party. The best part? These guests won't eat all the snacks!

Go Big

If you're willing to go farther (and deal with a little more pool cleanup) you can opt for these fun ideas to really impress your guests!

Pool dye won't stain at all, but with one dose you can have a pool full of red "blood", or green "swamp water". After 3 or 4 days, the dye gets filtered out of the system and you're once again left with sparkling blue water ready for swimming.

Fog machines or dry ice are another creepy pool effect that can really amp up the spooky vibe of your party. Place around the exterior edge of your pool and crank up the Halloween tunes, and you'll officially have the best party on your street.

EZ Roofing Systems loves all the aspects of Florida life…even our unique holiday celebrations! We are proud to serve our community here in Polk County with the very best in roofing services. Inspections, repairs, roof replacement…we do it all! Local home and business owners trust us to operate with integrity, honesty, and provide only the best quality in workmanship.

Happy Halloween from EZ Roofing Systems!

Considering Metal? Pros and Cons for Your Roof

When you're facing a roof replacement, the debate between traditional shingles and metal roofing is sure to come up. Some folks are totally sold out on metal roofing with its nostalgic sound on rainy days and its classic look, while others prefer to stay mainstream and stick to the look of shingles that match their neighbors (and are approved by their HOA). We've written plenty of content about shingles and traditional roofing materials, but what are our thoughts on metal roofs? EZ Roofing Systems provides installation services for both types of roofing, so we feel confident when we say we provide a relatively comprehensive list of pros and cons about opting for metal.

So, why should, or shouldn't, you choose metal when you're planning a roof replacement?

Pros

The pros of installing a metal roof, besides the aesthetic component, is the longevity and durability. Metal roofing is known to last up to 70 years, and in Florida's intense weather, that's a big deal! In addition, it can withstand strong winds and resists breakdown and cracking over time, which better protects your home. If that wasn't enough, a metal roof is environmentally friendly! Your new metal roof could lower your energy costs by as much as 25% since it reflects the sun's heat and keeps your home cooler, and since all the materials are recyclable, your roof can be reused at the end of its life cycle protecting your home.

Cons

The primary con when evaluating metal roofs is the COST. A good quality metal roof can be double (or more!) the price of a traditional, shingled roof. This is an important factor for many homeowners, as saving for a roof can take years, and this would add a significant amount of time. If you're already facing a degrading roof and need a replacement fast, a metal roof might not be feasible. In addition to the price, the lack of flexibility (literally and figuratively) could play into your decision. Because metal roofing lasts a long time, you could face having to color match it if you add onto your home or if you end up with an unexpected repair following an accident or hurricane. It's much harder to match metal roofing, especially if it has been years since the original installation.

Do you have questions about metal roofing? Are you wondering what would work best for your budget and your home? We're here to help! Feel free to get in touch with our team and schedule an estimate, where we'll discuss your options and begin the process toward your new roof. EZ Roofing Systems is proud to serve the Central Florida area with roof inspections, repairs, and replacements. We offer competitive pricing, honest and reliable service, and the best in customer care. Call us!

Why Now? 3 Reasons Why You SHOULDN'T Put Off Your Roof Replacement

Is your roof approaching its "expiration date" in the coming year? Did you recently receive an inspection that suggested a replacement in the near future? We get it, roof replacements are expensive, and you're likely thinking through how long you can put it off. With prices of goods soaring and many people feeling the crunch, replacing your roof probably wasn't on your short list of things to pay for. However, now might actually be the best time to take the leap and have the work done. Why?

  • Supply delays are happening. If you've noticed empty spaces on your store shelves, you're not alone! Unfortunately, some of those same supply issues have hit the roofing industry, and sourcing the materials needed to replace your roof will likely take longer than usual. If you're trying to meet a deadline with your HOA, your insurance company, or are experiencing a worsening leak, you might not have time to wait! Getting started now means you're more likely to get the materials you need by the time your new roof needs to be completed.

  • Your new roof isn't the only thing going up! Prices of gasoline, food, lumber, and other high-demand items are through the roof (pun intended!) and roofing materials are no exception. Shingles, plywood, and other needed supplies have all increased in price substantially over the last year, and sources say they'll continue to rise. Opting to replace your roof now means you lock in the current price of materials instead of taking the gamble and paying twice as much for your roof in the months to come.

  • Hurricane season is still happening. If your roof is aged and weakening, it might not be ready to stand up to one of Florida's storms. If a hurricane comes our way this season, and you opted to put off your roof replacement, you could end up with major damage that necessitates a full replacement immediately. Unfortunately, the two factors above could make that a difficult and expensive process, adding more pressure to an already stressful situation. Being proactive and replacing now means you're more likely to make it through any storms unscathed.

EZ Roofing Systems is Polk County's trusted roofing company, with years of experience serving our community. We operate with honesty and integrity, which is why we want you to be aware of what's happening in the industry and make sure we help you plan accordingly to protect your home. Our affordable inspections make sure you're aware of issues before they become BIG problems, and when it's time for a repair or replacement, you know to call us first for the best in customer care and quality workmanship. Celebrate Mom with These Easy Tips!

Mother's Day is just a few days away! Are you ready? While flowers, gifts, and breakfast in bed, what if there was a way to celebrate Mom all year long? Making mom feel special for a day is fun for celebrating, but finding ways to surprise her with helping hands and items taken off her to-do list is the ultimate love letter. We have some tips to get you started, but be sure to brainstorm ideas for your own wife, mom, grandmother, or other important lady in your life. She's sure to appreciate it!

Some simple ways to support Mom and show her how much you love her every day include:

  • Take over dish duty. If mom usually ends up in front of the sink or dishwasher each night, make sure you're there before she is! Taking this simple chore off her list gives her a few extra minutes in her evening. Maybe she'll finally have time to pick up that book she's been putting off, or enjoying 5 more minutes of quiet on the back patio before dark.

  • Clean her car. A clean care takes time and energy, and those are two things Mom usually doesn't have at the end of the day. Give her car a glow up, with an interior detail, and a good wash and wax. You can pay a professional and surprise her, or grab your rags, the hose, and the vacuum and do it yourself.

  • Plan a meal (or more) each week. Taking just one night off Mom's plate each week is a great way to show your love. Planning, shopping for, and preparing dinner on a busy weeknight can relieve stress, or give her a relaxing weekend and take over dinner on Saturday or Sunday night. She's sure to appreciate a tasty meal that she didn't have to make.

We hope this helps you get a head start on your own list for Mom this coming year. Another way to help her feel taken care of and appreciated? Make sure she isn't the one required to keep up with scheduling ALL of the household maintenance. EZ Roofing Systems makes it easy to schedule your annual roof inspection, so you can get it on the calendar and off her plate. We provide inspection, repair, and roof replacement services to the greater Polk County region of Central Florida. Call us for your estimate!

Happy Mother's Day from EZ Roofing Systems!

The Importance of a Professional: Why You Should Choose Your Roofer Carefully

Roofing contractors carry a lot on their shoulders, and we aren't just talking about bundles of shingles. Those who are licensed and insured, with adequate experience under their belts, know that they must take on multiple roles and carry many responsibilities during the roofing process for a client. A few of the other professions they have to tap into during the course of a job include:

Legal Code Enforcement. While roofing contractors are by no means a lawyer, they do need understanding of local laws and codes. In Florida, each county has varying codes and requirements that must be met, and certain types of permits could be required, before work can be done. Hiring a roofer who is familiar with your city with years of experience will not only make this process smoother, but possibly faster, as they already know how to file any and all paperwork quickly, and can get it into the hands of the appropriate people ASAP.

Plumber. Yep, plumbing and roofing actually do go hand in hand every now and then. When plumbing is put in during the construction of a home, there are "stacks" or vents that extend up and out of the roof of your home. These offer positive water flow and help release any gas and pressure buildup inside your drain pipes. If you hire a handyman with little roofing experience to do your roof repair or replacement, you could end up with costly damage to these pipes, and in turn, have to pay for a plumber to fix the mistakes. A licensed and experienced roofer will know what to look for, and how to avoid damaging these areas in the midst of your roofing job.

HVAC Tech. Much like the plumbing mentioned above, your HVAC system often has components that are vented out of your roof. Bumping any of these, or damaging them in any way, could lead to expensive AC repairs. Another reason to call in the pros that know how to avoid these problematic areas when working on your roof!

Pest Management. Roofers see a fair share of pest issues here in Florida. Roof rats and squirrels are two major contributors, as they are notorious for chewing holes in roofing materials to gain access to attic spaces inside your home. During winter months, they use these access points to come and go as they please, using your insulation as nesting material for the cooler weather. A quality roofer will recognize these types of damages, and can make sure they are properly repaired and sealed off before they complete your job. Then, they'll let you know about the issue so you can call a true pest management team in to tackle the problem from the inside.

EZ Roofing Systems is proud to serve the greater Polk County area with quality roofing service and neighborly customer care. We are licensed and insured, and with years of experience under our tool belt, you can count on us to get the job done right the first time, every time. From full roof replacement to minor repairs, we have you covered!

Networking Is "EZ" in A Community Like Ours!

This week, EZ Roofing Systems had the honor of participating in the Epcar Luau Trade Show at the Legoland Beach Retreat. This event was a great time for business owners in our area to network with one another, and with local realtors, which is always great for boosting your business (and your morale)! The trade show was a huge success, and it had us thinking about the importance of building relationships in your community, and how to make that happen, no matter where you live! Here are some ways we like to network in and around Winter Haven (our town) and ideas for implementing it where you are too!

Watch the News! While local events don't often make it onto prime time television (unless you live in a big city!) your local news outlets like newspapers, magazines, and online resources are a great place to find out what's going on in your area. Expos, trade shows, fairs, farmer's markets...there are plenty of great ways to connect with locals and other business owners at these types of events. Sometimes they have a specific focus (i.e., they are only open to business owners from a certain industry) but others are open to everyone! The trade show we attended this week was focused on realtors as guests, but was open to vendors/businesses from a wide variety of industries, from Spas and AC techs, to our very own Bob the Roofer.

Know Where the Locals Go. Local residents of your area are the best way to build a community around your business. They will begin to see you as more of a neighbor or friend, and that means they're more likely to use and recommend your business when a need arises. Learn which hangouts are favorites of the locals and make that a focus. Go in frequently to enjoy a meal, grab a drink or just relax and chat. These connections go a long way as you build your brand within your immediate area and beyond.

Join A Club for Business Owners! Finding a group of fellow business owners isn't always easy, but there are clubs and networking groups to simplify the process. Local chapters of networking groups (like BNI are a wonderful way to quickly meet and socialize with lots of other professionals at one time, while also building a base of referrals and contacts. We are proud to be a part of our local BNI chapter, and encourage small business owners to be a part of one in their own area. It's a great investment in your business!

EZ Roofing Systems loves being part of the Winter Haven community and it's a pleasure to serve clients that we consider neighbors. We believe in running our business with honesty and integrity, and are proud to carry that reputation in our town. Call us for ALL of your roofing needs!

Love Your Roof with Some TLC!

Do you show your roof plenty of TLC? TLC is an important part of roof maintenance, but it might not be what you think! Instead of "Tender Love and Care" we encourage you to think of TLC (in regards to your roof) as...

TAKE TIME, LOOK, AND CALL.

What do we mean? Well, let us break it down for you!

Take Time. Taking time for your roof is important. Keeping up with annual inspections is a big part of maintenance, and when you miss them, damage can go unnoticed and lead to much bigger problems. In addition to taking time out of your schedule to make your inspection appointment, you should also take time to...

Look. Keeping eyes on your roof is a key part of maintenance as well. Watching for signs of damage or wear and tear like:

  • loose or cracked shingles

  • buckling or curling shingles or roof materials

  • excessive moss or algae growth

  • worn and missing granules

  • interior leaking

is also key to keeping your roof functioning well and mitigating issues as early as possible. At the first sign of trouble, you need to...

Call! Don't put off calling in the professionals if you notice something going on with your roof. Calling EZ Roofing Systems is the best way to get prompt, reliable service and take care of your roof's issues ASAP. By addressing the problems early, you are saving yourself stress and money, as issues allowed to go on unchecked lead to further water damage, and could turn a minor repair into a full roof replacement. You can count on our team to give you our honest opinion, and only suggest what you need, without markups and unnecessary add-ons.

Central Florida trusts EZ Roofing Systems first with their homes. Remember to show your roof some TLC, and keep our number close by!

If You're Cold, They're Cold: Don't Let Them In!

Central Florida doesn’t usually experience cold weather, and that leaves all of us scrambling when the temps drop. Finding jackets, hats, boots, blankets, and the button for the heater are all rare needs for Florida residents, and can be a bit of a hassle when you’re not accustomed to having them as part of your routine! It’s important to note that cool temperatures aren’t just unusual for people…critters feel the cold too, and that can leave some of them running directly for YOUR home to find shelter. While this isn’t a problem if the animal in question is your dog or cat, but what about other creatures that try to take advantage of the warm spaces in and around your home?

Roof Rats are one such creature. Also known as Palm Rats, Black Rats, Ship Rats, or House Rats, they are pretty much what you’d picture when you hear the word “rat” and aren’t exactly the cute, furry friend you want to find in your attic or garage. Not only are they a nuisance, disease-carrying species, but they are one of the leading rodent pests in Florida, and cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to people's homes each year. How?

Well, first you have to understand a little about the lifestyle of this rat. Unlike some of their relatives who prefer ground-level living, or even below ground hiding places (like sewers), roof rats prefer to spend their days up in the trees, hence the name "Palm Rats". Fruit is their primary food source, and since Florida is plentiful in fruits of all kinds, they rarely go hungry. Because of this, they are a year-round problem here in the greater Polk County area, with our own nearby city of Tampa being named as one of the top cities in the US with roof rat infestations in recent years. While they’re usually content to hang out in the trees and only use your roof as a bridge to get from one high point to another, they can, and do, sneak into people’s homes frequently. Whether for nesting or hiding purposes, or for warmth in cooler temperatures, they can accomplish an expensive amount of destruction in a short amount of time.

So, what should you expect when it comes to roof rat damage, and how can you protect yourself? Roof rats can fit through very small spaces, sometimes as small as 1/2 inch diameter (depending on the size of the rat of course). This means they can sneak into pipes, ducts that vent outdoors, or poorly sealed areas. Once in, they’re skilled in destroying HVAC ductwork, wires, cables, and insulation in the process. If they can't find a pre-existing space to fit through and gain access to your home, they can chew their way in, leaving your roof vulnerable to the elements and presenting secondary issues like water damage, further infestation of other pests, etc. Once you have roof rats, getting rid of them is a costly and lengthy process, requiring the help of professionals in most cases, so prevention is best. The best way to prevent roof rats is by taking the following measures:

  1. Keep all trees and shrubs trimmed back away from the perimeter of your home. Trees with branches extending over, or nearly touching, your roofline are the primary way that rats (and other creatures) gain access to your roof. Take away their opportunity!

  2. Stay vigilant when you are in your attic. Watch for any signs of things being amiss, such as rodent feces, insulation being strewn in places it doesn't belong, items in your attic being chewed, and so forth. By catching signs of activity early, you can potentially get help before the infestation becomes severe.

  3. Invest in routine roof inspections by a professional. Semi-annually, or at the very least, annually, invest in a thorough roof inspection by a local professional. Roofing contractors will know exactly what to look for, and can spot the telltale signs of rodent activity that others would miss. They can help you formulate a plan of action if they do find evidence of roof rats, and can help repair damage caused by the unwelcome pests, so you don't end up with expensive secondary damage.

These cool temperatures are the perfect time to call for a roof inspection. Not only will your roofer thank you (those shingles are HOT during the summer!) but you’ll also have a better chance of catching rodent damage before it becomes severe and/or has time to lead to further damage inside your roof. If we see any signs of rodent activity, we will alert you immediately, so you can get your pest control team on site and on top of the issue as soon as possible. We will also thoroughly examine your roof for any potential entrance points, any existing damage, and any areas of concern that need attention. Once we give you a detailed report of our findings, we discuss available options and work with you to come to the best solution for your home and your situation. Our expert team of roofing contractors have a reputation of reliability and honesty. We make roof replacements and repairs “EZ” every time!

Holiday Hacks for a Carefree Christmas

Christmas is just a few weeks away, and as the holiday crunch sets in, it's easy to get stressed and overwhelmed instead of enjoying the season. While you can't just sit back and relax when you're the one responsible for pulling off the Yuletide traditions in your family, there are some hacks and shortcuts that can make this time of year easier to manage and more enjoyable for everyone, including you! Try these ideas as you plan and participate in holiday events in the coming days:

  • Make a Christmas bucket list. Kids naturally want to do everything Christmas if they're given the opportunity, but when you fill up every date on the calendar and still have to find time to deck the halls, prepare food, shop for gifts, and do all the wrapping, the season loses some of its magic. Instead, give your kids (even teens!) the opportunity to share their favorite one or two Christmas events/traditions that they'd like to see on the family calendar. Local parades, parties, gingerbread house decorating as a family, visiting favorite Christmas spots, etc. are all fair game for the list, and it can easily be tailored to fit your family's own specific needs. By having each person contribute a limited number of events, and by seeing which events overlap among your family, it's easier to manage your holiday calendar and make sure everyone gets to celebrate without you being stressed out by Christmas Eve.

  • It's ok to take shortcuts. Not everything holiday has to be made from scratch, perfectly Pinterest, or Instagram worthy. Taking shortcuts like using premade dough for Christmas cookies, ordering the holiday ham from a local restaurant, or asking family members to bring potluck sides to take off some of the load is perfectly fine, and will make the holiday happier for everyone since you'll be in a better mood and able to enjoy the fun.

  • Turn a chore into a party! Putting up Christmas lights alone can feel like a drudgery...unless you make it a neighborhood event! Hot chocolate served in the driveway, Christmas carols playing, and everyone out in their yards at the same time is a wonderful way to make a chore into something fun! In the same way, "wrapping parties" are a popular way to make gift wrapping an enjoyable experience for groups of friends. Everyone contributes a few rolls of paper, BYO ribbons and tags (and a bottle of wine or a fun holiday drink) and can enjoy chatting with friends, watching a Christmas movie, or listening to tunes while they knocked out that pile of gifts for their family and friends.

We hope these tips will help you soak up the season and make memories this Christmas. EZ Roofing Systems encourages you to take time to appreciate the small things this year, and put aside some of the busyness to cherish memories with the ones you love most. All of us at EZ Roofing Systems send our wishes for a joyful and peaceful Christmas to you and yours.

Happy Halloween for EVERYbody: Three Ways to Make Halloween More Inclusive This Season

Halloween is just a couple of weeks away. Kids (and adults) are picking out the perfect costume and preparing for lots of fun, and PLENTY of candy. While some families will still be participating in traditional trick-or-treating in nearby neighborhoods, other families here in Polk County might not yet feel comfortable going out in droves to take part. What's more, there are children and adults in our community who have never been able to participate in a traditional way (even before the pandemic) due to limiting factors like varying physical abilities, food allergies, or difficulty going out at the traditional time on Halloween. Perhaps more than ever before, we could all use the fun and magic that comes with a holiday, and making sure everyone in our community can participate matters to us! Here are three ways you can make Halloween more inclusive this year, both for your family and for those around you:

Offer allergy-friendly treats. Having a separate bucket of stickers or small trinkets and toys is a great way to provide an alternative option for kids who have allergies or are too young to enjoy typical candies and sweets. Often, allergy-friendly treats are differentiated with a teal bucket, but if you don't have one, just put a label out (or tell people yourself if you're present!) so parents will know how to help their child choose best.

Make your setup accessible for everyone. If trick-or-treaters must make it up your driveway, over uneven pavers, up stairs, etc. to get to the treats on Halloween, it doesn't make it easy for ghosts or goblins who might be limited by walking difficulty or being wheelchair bound. If you set up a candy station at the end of your driveway or walkway, you make sure ALL spooky visitors can get to the goods, which they (and their families!) will appreciate.

Consider BOOing your neighbors! If you know there are families in your neighborhood who can't trick or treat in the traditional way because of health risks or work schedules, you could bring a big smile to their face by BOOing them...in the nicest way possible of course! Pack up a basket with fun Halloween treats, a spooky craft, and/or some fun activities like bubbles or sidewalk chalk, and leave it on their doorstep with a note letting them know they had a ghostly visitor to bring a little holiday fun. Anonymous or not, you can feel good knowing you spread some happiness!

EZ Roofing Systems is excited to see Winter Haven come out in full force to celebrate a fun holiday AND celebrate our neighbors this Halloween. Community matters to us, and that’s why we are proud to provide quality service with respect and integrity at the core of our business. We believe in treating each client as a neighbor, making sure they feel confident that we have their best interest at heart, and will provide a fair quote, solid work, and reliable customer service. We make choosing a roofer in Central Florida “EZ” when a repair comes your way. Give us a call!

Water Damage WHERE?! A Roof Leak Affects More Than Your Ceiling
unsplash-image-QXebPkNw2jQ.jpg

When you think about a roof leak, you probably think of water staining on the ceiling, water dripping onto the floor below, and the classic "metal bucket" catching water from the cartoons of old. However, when your roof springs a leak it can affect areas FAR worse than the ceiling, costing you large amounts of money and (sometimes) requiring extensive remodeling work for your home. When you're tempted to skip your routine roof inspection, or put off the suggested repairs by your roofer, remember:

  • A roof leak can damage your HVAC system. Many times, Florida home builders put the air handler for the AC system in the attic, since we don't often have basements and the attic is out of the way (and hidden). Because of this, the heart of your AC system could be at risk if your roof starts leaking. Your first sign would likely be your system shorting out, and it's no fun being left with no AC AND a leaking roof. What's more, water damage to your AC unit may or may not be repairable, and you could be facing a whole new system installation. That's a lot of $$$ for one little leak.

  • Roof leaks can travel into the walls. Your first noticeable water accumulation might not actually be on the ceiling if your roof starts leaking. If the leak is occurring above a major wall, you could actually end up with damage to flooring or carpet, drywall, trim, and more. Even worse, many times by the time it's noticeable, the damage is done. You could likely have damage to your wall studs, mold growth, and more. The cost of replacement and remediation of these issues is far beyond what the roof repair would have cost initially.

  • Damage to irreplaceable items. Let's face it, your attic often holds precious items. Heirloom pieces, holiday decor passed down from childhood, tokens and trinkets from your own children, and more. If your roof leaks, these items will be hit first, and that's something your insurance policy can't replace. Protecting your possessions starts by protecting your home and your roof.

EZ Roofing Systems provides top-quality roof inspection, repair, and replacement to communities throughout Central Florida. With years of experience, a fully licensed and insured team, and a brand built on integrity and respect for our customers, we're your go-to when it's time to take care of your roof. Summer Has Arrived in Florida: What That Means for Your Roof
EZRS image.jpg

As we have closed out the month of May and welcomed June, it's pretty much assumed at this point that we are officially in "summer" mode. In Florida, that means more than the end of school and planning for vacations...it also means hurricane season, routine thunderstorms, and HEAT. This can take a toll on your roof over time, and if you've skipped having routine inspections done in the past, now is the time to make up for it.

How exactly can summer put your roof at risk?

  • Hurricanes. June 1st marked the kickoff of hurricane season 2021, and while there are no storms on the radar right now, we all know that can change in a matter of days. Hurricanes bring an incredible amount of rain, and in more serious cases, strong winds. These two elements alone can be detrimental to your roof even if it's in good shape, but if there are any weak spots or existing damage, even one minor hurricane could prove catastrophic. Things to watch for include loose or missing shingles, damaged flashing or roof vents, and clogged gutters if your home has them. Unfortunately, other issues that could leave your roof compromised can't be seen with the naked eye from the ground. That's why annual roof inspections or vital to protecting your home. Spots that are aging, or damage going on beneath the shingles, will be caught early and repaired before it has a chance to be a bigger (and more expensive) problem.

  • Thunderstorms. Florida is known for its afternoon thunderstorms during the summer months. The lightning is impressive, but the RAIN is what really stands out. It can go from sunny to monsoon in a matter of seconds, and when your roof has to stand up to that heavy rain day after day for months, it can lead to leaks. What's more, the continued exposure to water can harbor moisture and condensation (including your attic!) and that can lead to the decay of wood and roof materials over time. Again, roof inspections are the best way to combat these problems, as professionals check for hidden moisture or weak areas that you might not see on your own.

  • Heat. The Sunshine State got its name for a reason. The sun is intense, and our summers are hot. The extreme temperatures take a toll on your roof after a while. Shingles break down more quickly in Florida, and a roof that should last 30 years might only make it to 15. Taking measures to extend the life of your roof saves you money in the long run, and also protects your home (and your home's insurance policy) when bad weather does come your way. When it is time to replace your roof, hiring a roofing contractor that has your best interests at heart and runs and honest, ethical business, is key. You need someone who will help you choose the best materials for the job, and is experienced with Florida's conditions, so you will get the maximum number of years out of your new roof.

What to Expect When We Inspect: Roof Inspections by EZ Roofing Systems
unsplash-image-Wzub0VR4OHU.jpg

Spring is the perfect time for taking care of general household maintenance, preparing to put your home on the market, or taking care of long-awaited repairs. Often, each of these goals requires some kind of inspection beforehand. When you schedule a home inspection, you probably know what to expect. The same is true when you hire professionals to come in and evaluate your electrical wiring or your plumbing. You don't necessarily expect something to be wrong, but if it is, it's nice to catch it early isn't it? Few homeowners fully understand roof inspections though, and because they don't know what to expect, they often overlook this important part of home maintenance. Roofing contractors can vary in their approach to inspecting a roof, but for the most part, there are general points checked on every job. Here's what you can expect when you call EZ Roofing Systems to inspect

  • We start inside! We check ceilings throughout the home (or in the attic) for signs of water damage and leaks. We also examine your insulation and ventilation, keeping a close eye out for any signs of wood rot or mold thanks to hidden moisture.

  • Gutters are an important part of your home's water management, and we'll check them thoroughly for any areas that could be leading to roof damage or excess wear and tear. We also look for higher-than-normal amounts of granules gathering in the gutters after being washed down (this can be a sign it's time for new shingles).

  • We'll look for any missing or damaged shingles, and we check all flashing (especially in "hot spots" like around your chimney) to catch any weaknesses or potential leaks early.

  • We keep our eyes open for red flags, including patch work left behind by previous owners or dishonest roofers, handymen, or contractors who have been on your home in the past. Poorly completed work can actually be a weak spot, leaving your home more vulnerable than it was before you invested in the "repair."

If, following your roof inspection, we see any areas of concern, you can expect a written report to explain the findings, and a potential plan of action so you can look ahead and have an idea of what will need to be done to get your roof back into its best shape as quickly as possible. We typically include not only a layout of a plan, but a price estimate as well, so you can financially prepare for the project. You don't have to make a decision same-day! You can use the information we give you to make an informed decision. Our goal is to keep our clients in the loop and make them feel secure and at peace throughout the entire roof repair or roof replacement. We are always happy to answer questions and make clarifications, and that's why we are one of Polk County's most trusted roofing providers. If you are in the Winter Haven area, give us a call and see how we can help you.

What If It Isn't Your Lucky Day? Why Credentials Matter When Choosing A Roofing Contractor
unsplash-image-QeVXToj_JC8.jpg

St. Patrick's Day is around the corner, and we were wondering...are you feeling lucky?? Do you often rely on luck to get you through when it comes to making decisions? That might work fine with choices like where to go for dinner, where to vacation, or even what color shirt to wear (just pull one out of the dryer, right?), but when you need a service provider, luck just isn't good enough. Choosing someone to work on your home's most important parts like the plumbing, the roof, or the HVAC system is a big deal, and making the wrong decision could have disastrous and long-lasting consequences.

So, how should you go about choosing the best person or company for the job when a need arises? Well, there are three main factors to look for:

License

Insurance

References

Why? Well, if a contractor or business is licensed, that means they've met a set of required standards in their field, and they actually are trained and qualified to handle your job. Opting for an unlicensed individual or a "business" you found through a homemade yard sign at the street corner could leave you with someone who learned all of their skills from YouTube and has no legitimate education or experience. That could leave you holding the bill for poor work and damages to your home. Which leads to the second factor you need to consider: insurance.

Insurance matters for you AND for the service provider. An insured contractor or company is not only protecting you from accidents or faulty work, but they're also protecting themselves in case they get injured on your property and your coverage won't assist them in the recovery or damages. A provider who doesn't carry insurance obviously doesn't care about you or about themselves, and that's a risk you just don't want to take.

Finally, you have the right to look for, and ask for, references before you make a decision. Any quality company will have previous clients who can offer insight into the quality of work, the customer service experience, the strengths/weaknesses of the particular business, and more. If a business owner or individual can't or won't give you any references and the ability to contact them, and if you have a hard time finding any legitimate reviews about the service, it's a good indicator that you need to keep searching. If they're proud of their work and have satisfied clients, they'll want to show them off!

EZ Roofing Systems is proud to offer the very best in roofing services to the greater Polk County area in Central Florida. Our attention to detail, honesty and ethics, and focus on customer service and satisfaction are why homeowners call us to get the job done right the first time, every time. Roof repairs, inspections, and full replacements are all in a day's work for us, and we are proud to leave you with a roof you can feel good about. Have a fun (and safe) St. Patty's Day. Best of luck to you!

Spread Cheer This Year: 2020 Decor Tips from Your Local Roofer

When it comes to Christmas decorations, people usually fall somewhere in between two points on this spectrum: outdoor extravaganza or no Christmas lights outside at all. No matter where you fall on the scale, it's no secret that Christmas lights are a favorite pastime, from small communities to the big city, and Polk County is no exception. Lakeland, Winter Haven, and even nearby Tampa and Orlando are known for having impressive commercial light displays, in addition to homeowners who have developed a reputation for their cheery and bright decor. Even if you don't choose to go all out, adding a little bit of seasonal fun to your home's exterior is a great way to spread Christmas spirit, and this year more than ever before, that could be a big deal to you AND to passerby.

Here are our three favorite ideas for fun and affordable outdoor decor as you deck the halls for Christmas:

  1. Every tree can be a Christmas tree. Even if you can't adorn each shrub and tree in tightly wound lights, you can easily (and cheaply) decorate the trees in front of or around your home with a strand or two of inexpensive lights, and some large-scale ornaments found at your discount or dollar store. These ornaments are easily hung in branches with simple fishing line and they add a fun pop of interest to the branches (or palm fronts!). Turn your front yard into a holiday wonderland by making EVERY tree a Christmas tree, and placing some fun treats or goodies for neighbors underneath for a socially distanced, drive-by holiday party. Your friendly smile and a "Merry Christmas" from your front porch is sure to brighten their season.

  2. Make it a musical. So, you've put out lights, a few fun lawn ornaments, and still aren't feeling as festive as you were hoping? Add some Christmas tunes to your setup this year! A simple speaker or two can easily be placed on a front porch, or, even in the edge of an open garage, and used to spread Christmas magic through song. Choose upbeat, classic carrolls that will add a little bit of happiness and normalcy to this Christmas as your friends and neighbors drive or walk by. Are you REALLY feeling adventurous? Look for online tutorials for setting up your lights and timers to go along with the music for your own private holiday show.

  3. Go big! Sometimes less is more...and sometimes you want BIG impact from your holiday decor. If this is the year you're ready to supersize your curb appeal, there are a lot of great options! Large-scale inflatable Christmas decor is popular now and can be found at any big box or hardware store. From giant, working snowglobes to fun and familiar movie characters, you're sure to find something that makes you smile and gives your neighbors a chuckle. When it comes to Christmas inflatables, the bigger the better!

We hope you'll take time to reflect this year on what really matters, and enjoy the holiday season for all it's meant to be: a time to celebrate peace, hope, joy, love, and be thankful for our blessings and the ones we care about most. While 2020 has certainly been less than ideal, we believe that spreading kindness this Christmas is a great way to bring joy to yourself at the same time, and will make this holiday one to be remembered for the right reasons. Our team can’t wait to see Polk County light up this holiday season, and from our vantage point “up on the rooftop” we’ll be sure to preview your display for Santa! Don’t forget to be mindful of how and where you hang your lights on your roof and around the eaves of your home. While we’d love to see you and wish you a happy holiday, we don’t want it to be because of damage or a newfound leak! We wish you and your household a very Merry Christmas from all of us at EZ Roofing Systems.

Don't Be A Turkey: Tips for Keeping Your Home Holiday Ready from the Top Down

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, with Christmas close behind, and we know many of you are gearing up for holiday preparations. While there's always your "standard" list of things to get done (like pulling the Christmas wreaths from the attic or hunting for your grandmother's famous pie recipes) each year brings its own unique to-do list. This year is certainly no exception, with 2020 bringing new elements into our holiday traditions. Maybe you're adding hand sanitizer by the door, or doing "virtual" Thanksgiving dinner with faraway relatives who can't travel. No matter how you plan to celebrate, everyone can agree that holidays go better when your home is ready.

Unfortunately, one major part of your home tends to get overlooked when it comes to maintenance and care. Your roof plays an important part in keeping your home's structure intact, and keeping the inside safe and dry, yet homeowners forget about it for years at a time. Until, that is, a problem comes up. It's important to understand though that there are things you can do all year long to keep your roof at its best and prevent major issues (and expensive repairs) from coming your way.

Three of our most recommended tips are:

  1. Save the experiments for the kitchen. The holidays are a time of enjoying the smells and flavors of the season, and the kitchen is a great place to experiment with new dishes and flavor combinations. Your roof, on the other hand, is NOT the place to experiment. If you notice a small problem like a shingle coming loose or a tiny leak over your patio, "rigging" it with spray sealant, outdoor caulk, or some other bonding agent is NOT the answer. Not only are many of these materials not intended for use on your roof, but they could actually cause more damage in the long run. Before a small problem turns into a big catastrophe, call in the pros.

  2. Don't let Santa be the only one up on the rooftop each year. An annual roof inspection by a licensed and insured roof contractor is the ideal way to keep your roof's structure and condition under watch, meaning any problems can be caught early and repaired easily. This can protect you from extensive water damage, warranting a full roof replacement, and will usually save you money in the long run.

  3. Show your home you care...maintain your space! Not only does your roof need regular maintenance, but the trees and space around it do too. Failing to prune back trees, remove leaf litter, or let extensive algae build up can actually cause damage to your shingles and roofing materials over time. Trim back trees so they stay several feet from the surface of your roof, and have leaves and buildup removed professionally. Good news! EZ Roofing Systems now offers a cleaning service that does this for you, so you can get your inspection and your cleaning done all at one time!

We hope your Thanksgiving preparations go smoothly and you can look forward to the holidays with anticipation and joy after a hard year. EZ Roofing Systems is here to make it a little easier with our top-of-the-line customer service and attention to ethics and detail. We make roofing issues less stressful and easier to manage. What to Watch for: Indicators That Your Roof Is Wearing Out

A question we hear frequently from homeowners is "Does my roof need to be replaced?"

This question is often accompanied by an uncomfortable, almost pained expression, as most people are under the misconception that needing a roof repair automatically means you're facing an imminent (and expensive) replacement. Thankfully, we usually have good news for them!

Roofs can need repair for a variety of reasons, from a loose shingle or two after hurricanes or heavy thunderstorms, to minor areas of damage because of a falling limb or pest issue. Most times, these repairs can be taken care of on their own, without requiring large-scale work or full replacement. This is especially true when the issue is caught early on (one more reason to invest in those roof inspections each year!) and when action is taken as soon as possible.

However, there are warning signs that can creep up over time, letting a homeowner know that it's time to prepare for a roof replacement in the near future. Watch for...

  • Popping roof nails. If you're suddenly finding roofing nails around the perimeter of your home, this could be a sign that you have loosening shingles and roof material, leaving the wood underneath susceptible to water damage and rot. Not only is it a bad sign for your roof, but having nails show up can be dangerous for children and pets playing in the surrounding yard, and could also end up in a tire if they are on your driveway!

  • Sand-like or gritty residue. If you notice sand or grit building up in gutters and storm drains, or in the areas around your home where water falls from your roof, it's not just regular "dirt" coming from your home. This grit is actually the surface material of your shingles, and when it begins washing away, it's a good indicator that they are beginning to degrade and will need to be replaced.

  • Loosening shingles. Shingles that are flapping loosely, are curling up, or have come off of your roof entirely are a sure sign that you need to call a roofer ASAP to have an inspection done on your home. While heavy winds and storms can cause this to happen, if it's an ongoing occurrence without outside factors like weather, it's a sign that you might need a roof replacement in the near future.

EZ Roofing Systems offers a wide variety of roofing services to the greater Winter Haven area, from routine inspections and assistance with insurance claims, to full roof replacements on homes of all sizes. Give us a call for a free estimate and to schedule an appointment with one of our highly qualified team members. We are licensed, insured, and we make getting a new roof "EZ" and stress-free.

Know The Signs: Choosing A Quality Contractor for Your New Roof

Choosing a contractor for work on your home is always important, but few things require more homework and careful decision-making than having your roof replaced. A poor roofing job can not only lead to issues with leaking and water damage down the road, but can also cause issues with your insurance company and claims in the future. How though, can you be sure you're hiring a quality contractor for your job?

There are a few telltale signs to watch for that let you know you are (or aren't) hiring the best person for the job:

  • A detailed estimate following your initial consultation. A quality contractor will come to your home, meet with you, inspect your roof, and then put together an itemized estimate. They will be willing to go over this itemized list with you, noting the brand and type of materials to be used, how the costs break down over materials and labor, and what portions are/are not optional. If a contractor shows up, is ready to jump on the roof that same day, and says you can "talk about numbers later," you need to send them on their way.

  • No mention of cleanup protocol. Quality roofing contractors use heavy-duty magnets to do thorough cleanup following a job. Occasionally (but not always) they will even return more than one time to ensure no nails are left behind to be stepped on or picked up by a tire, pet, etc. If your chosen team never mentions cleanup, and shows up with only a couple of shovels, a rake, and a pickup truck, you might need to stop them before they even climb that ladder.

  • Plan of action. Your roofer needs to provide a plan, from the arrival time on the day(s) work is to be done, to how their follow-up procedures work. Even if they don't provide all information up front, they should easily and comfortably be able to answer your questions about the plan and schedule, including how many team members to expect, how long the job should take, and so forth.

  • Communication is a key indicator of a quality roofer. You need to feel in the loop when you're paying such a large sum of money for a household project. A good contractor is easy to reach by phone, email, or text message, and is prompt in getting back to you in the event that you have to leave a message. If you're enduring ignored phone calls, un-returned messages, and general lack of communication from your contractor, you need to find a new one.

EZ Roofing Systems takes pride in offering the very highest quality of service to our clients, from choosing the best materials on the market, to staying in close communication with each individual homeowner throughout their roofing process. We make the process "EZ," so why would you suffer through with anyone else? Give us a call for your estimate!
